If the 150 deaths from the GermanWings crash and the 224 killed in the Metrojet crash are subtracted, last year becomes commercial aviation’s safest ever, with 186 deaths. There were 16 fatal crashes, including the GermanWings and Metrojet crashes, of which only 7 involved scheduled passenger flights.

The Aviation Safety Network estimated worldwide air traffic of 34,000,000 flights in 2016, giving the accident rate of 1 fatal passenger flight accident for every 4,857,000 flights.
