RS232 Connections via Bluetooth
RS232 is a way of devices talking to each other. Because iOS and Android devices don’t have physical ports for connecting to avionics, this development bridges that gap and represents a big step forward in connectivity for SkyDemon. You first have to buy a BLE-to-RS232 adapter, which SkyDemon connects to wirelessly, and get your avionics engineer to make the physical connection between that adapter and your avionics. Connecting to radios introduces the possibility of sending frequencies straight from SkyDemon to the radio, with no need for manual tuning. We currently have support for many Garmin radios and compatible (including Trig), the Funke ATR833, the TQ KRT2 and Becker AR620X. The idea is, whenever you see a frequency onscreen, you simply tap it and it’s sent to either the standby or active slot on the radio (your choice). Watch Hannah demonstrate the feature in the video below.
Connecting to GPS and traffic receivers via Bluetooth means no more messing around with the WiFi settings on your device, and it means you can still access the internet while receiving traffic. We have already seen this prototyped in a forthcoming firmware update for the popular Air Avionics AT-1 traffic receiver, and Stratux devices support it too. We hope that future updates to all the popular traffic receivers add support for Bluetooth.
Finally, we now support connecting to autopilots and other avionics so that they are fed a constant stream of your route, course and trajectory data from SkyDemon while you are flying, and can respond appropriately. In the case of an autopilot, it will now be able to fly you through your entire planned route. Other avionics might be able to overlay your SkyDemon route on their own specialised maps.
We are only at the beginning of what’s possible with our new Bluetooth support. The future is exciting!
