Des études menées par Boeing ont montré qu’en moyenne chaque avion de ligne est frappé par la foudre deux fois par an. Bien que le flash lumineux et le bruit effarant qui en résultent puissent alarmer les passagers et l’équipage, les avions sont conçus de façon à être insensibles au foudroiement d’intensité normale. Lorsque la foudre touche un avion, le courant circule dans la carlingue puis continue sa route1. Un avion est en moyenne frappé par la foudre toutes les 1 000 heures de vol2.

Aircraft, and by that I mean the body of the aircraft and not the occupants inside, are protected from lightning strikes by two things. The first and most important of these is the brains of the pilot and the weathermen who predict where violent storms are likely to be. The second is through a small unsung device called the “static wick”.
