The experimental BiPod flying car was designed with gas engines that supplied energy to electric generators that drove motors for propellers, although the electric power system was not installed for the aircraft’s only, brief hop off the runway shortly after Rutan retired in 2011.

In 2015, Rutan unveiled the SkiGull amphibian. This design also included two small electric-driven propellers for propulsion during the taxi phase in the water, as well as supplementary power on takeoff.
