Frequency Monitoring Code (FMC)
From 20 March 2025, a new procedure will be introduced at FIR Langen as part of a
temporary trial operation. The background to this is the fact that the Flight Information
Service (FIS) often reaches its capacity limit due to increasing demand and very large FIS
sectors. The procedure was published in the AIP VFR with AIC 01/25:

This is a supplement to the existing FIS service, which is also intended to relieve the
burden. Many pilots already listen in on the corresponding frequency – especially during
local flights – in order to gain situational awareness of what is happening or information.
However, this remains hidden from the respective FIS pilot.
With the new method, pilots communicate their constant readiness to listen by switching
the FMC. If necessary, the FIS pilot can address the pilot by means of a broadcast or in
individual cases and provide him with targeted information. This includes, among other
things:
∑ Querying AIREPs
∑ Collision warning (no traffic information)
∑ Warning of short-term ED-Rs or bomb defusals
∑ Message from SIGMETs
The prerequisites are
∑ Setting the frequency 123.525 MHz (Long Information)
∑ Adjusting the FMC 3701
∑ Maintaining constant listening readiness
It is possible to establish a corresponding radio connection with FIS in the usual form at any
time if the pilot deems this necessary.
The trial operation extends exclusively to the area of Langen Information with the frequency
123.525 MHz. When the listening readiness ends or leaves the airspace, the transponder
must be switched back to the SSR code 7000 without being asked.
DFS asks that « FIS light » be used as often as possible in order to improve the provision of
the FIS. The trial operation ends on 26 October 2025 and will then be evaluated in
cooperation with the associations. Comments, queries and experiences can be sent directly
to DFS under vfr@dfs.de under the keyword FMC.
